How You Show Up

Hey you. Yes, you…

Whoever you are, reading this right now, the world is watching. They’re paying attention to how you’re reacting to this pandemic. How are you showing up right now, amid the chaos and uncertainty? Are you holding fast to those core values, personally and professionally, that you put on a pedestal back in January?

Those may be the most critical questions you answer today, this week, or over the next few months.

Here’s a reality check. We’re all going to remember this pandemic for a long time. It will be eternally etched into who we are as individuals. We’ll reminisce about how it felt when it rolled in, how it changed everything, and the “pivots” we had to make. We’ll remember the hurts and struggles for a long time – this may leave a few scars. We’ll recall how it forced us to slow down and for some of us stop. We’ll look back on the things we stopped doing, and the ones we started doing. These things will be vivid.

But of all the memories that stick, how we showed up will probably be the one thing that creates the most significant impact. This will be the thing we’ll remember twenty years from now. Today is defining us, whether we signed up for that or not, and the last thing any of us wants is to look back and say, “I wish I…”

This isn’t to say that showing up is easy. It’s not. Those core values we’ve put on our walls at work and made part of our families were a lot easier to live out in January. Today, they’re being put to the test, refined by fire. Every one of us is feeling the pressure of the pandemic in different ways, at work and at home, some more than others.

The reality is, though, that adversity comes and adversity goes. Pressure creates diamonds. It’s part of life, none of us are immune to it, and we’re going to get through this. It’s HOW we get through it that matters, so ask yourself these questions…

Are your values driving your most challenging decisions and choices?

Where are you investing your energy and time?

How are you stepping in to help others?

Who did you listen to today, when they needed someone to hear them?

Were you a source of light and positivity in the dark?

Call-to-Action

The actions we all take today, at work and home, will define our future. Not only will doing good right now likely come back to you in many ways, but you’re also investing in a memory bank that you’ll access for the rest of your life. So with that in mind… show up today, in whatever way you can, for the ones who need you most.
