High Performance is Like Holding Sand
Think back to being a kid at the beach…
You’ve probably done it, picked up a handful of sand and let it run loosely through your fingers, then squeezed it tight to try to hold onto it. Either way, the sand slips away.
On a recent episode of the Rich Roll Podcast, Kate Courtney used this simple visual to describe what it takes to perform at the highest levels. As she shared, sand is an incredible teacher when it comes to the delicate balance of high performance.
Before we go any further, let’s define something. High performance isn’t just for elite athletes or CEOs. It’s for anyone who wants to show up fully in their everyday life. For “normal” people, high performance means being intentional with your time and energy, consistently doing the things that matter most, and striving to grow without burning out. It’s about showing up for your family, your work, your health, and yourself with purpose and focus with a commitment to living with excellence – even in the ordinary moments.
Now, back to the sand… There’s a sweet spot between effort and ease, between gripping too tight and being too relaxed. On one side, you need to be locked in, intentional, and focused. Take that too far, and you become rigid, burned out, or anxious. On the other side, loosen your grip too much, and you drift, losing momentum, clarity, or discipline.
Just like the Goldilocks story, the magic lives in the middle, in “just right.”
How do you find your “just right?” Here are three things to consider:
Self-Awareness
First, pay attention to how you’re showing up. Are you tense and over-controlling? Or checked out and disengaged? High performance requires knowing when to push and when to breathe.
Sustainable Pace
You can’t redline every day. High performance requires building rhythms that allow you to show up with energy and consistency for the long haul, not just sprints.
Purpose over Pressure
When performance becomes about proving something, it adds weight. But when it’s rooted in purpose, your grip naturally adjusts. You find your sweet spot, firm but not forceful.
High performance isn’t just about going harder. That would seem like the easy answer, but you’d miss the mark.
High performance is about learning how to hold the sand—how to show up with intensity and fluidity, with focus and flexibility. It’s the discipline of being fully engaged without becoming consumed, of driving hard without losing your sense of self. That balance of gritty but not gripping, present but not passive, is where the real magic happens.
Call to Action
Whether you’re chasing a podium, leading a team, or building something meaningful in your life, the challenge is the same: find your grip. Adjust when needed and stay aware. Remember, the goal isn’t to crush the sand… it’s to carry it.
