Give the Gift of Kindness

There’s a lot of meaning and tradition packed into December.

It carries celebration, faith, reflection, family, and memories… all wrapped together and unwrapped over just a few short weeks. For many people, it’s a gift. For others, December can feel heavy. And for almost everyone, it comes with a quiet pressure to “get it right.”

That pressure shows up in small moments. A greeting at the office. A quick exchange at the store. A note at the end of an email. People pause, hesitate, second-guess, wondering whether what they’re about to say will land the way they intend. Will my “Merry Christmas” be offensive? Is it okay to say “Happy Hanukkah”? If someone tells me “Happy Hanukkah,” what do I say back? Is “Happy Holidays” an option, or will I get judged for that as well?

Sit with that long enough, and you may end up not saying anything at all.

Here’s a simple truth: in nearly all of those moments, people are just trying to be kind. Most holiday greetings are an attempt (sometimes clumsy, most times heartfelt) to acknowledge another human being in the middle of a busy day. I see you. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s the holiday version of a summer hello and a smile.

At OrangeBall, we spend our days helping organizations communicate more clearly. And clarity isn’t about perfection. It’s about intent, and understanding what someone is trying to do, not searching for reasons they got it wrong.

The same principle applies here. When someone offers a little warmth, however they phrase it, they’re extending a small moment of goodness. And those moments matter more than we realize, especially when schedules are packed, nerves are frayed, and the noise of the world feels louder than usual.

December doesn’t need more tension or bracing for offense where none was intended. What it does need is generosity of interpretation. Assume good intent. Meet warmth with warmth. Choose grace over analysis. And if we’re going to debate anything at all, let it be the truly important questions, like whether the driveway needs shoveling now… or whether one more cup of coffee might change everything.

From our house to yours, however you say it, may this season bring you rest, warmth, and moments of genuine connection.
